Senior Thesis: A Cycle of Subjugation

For my senior capstone at Arizona State University, I created a life-size exhibit exploring the cycle caused by lack of access to sex education and contraception. This is an issue that is often overlooked due to it's 'taboo' nature, but the cycle of subjugation perpetuated by it is in dire need of attention.

Without these resources, many women face unplanned pregnancies and limited autonomy, further reducing opportunities and deepening gender inequality. This cycle often repeats across generations with no end in sight, and the exhibit highlights the urgent need for better education and reproductive access.

To bring this concept to life, I designed and built an oversized birth control container, where each pill was representative of a piece of the cycle. The container and pills were fully hand made by me in the wood shop using MDF wood, with each pill laser-engraved, painted, and embedded with magnets to allow for physical interaction and engagement.

A dosage sign helped guide the viewer’s experience while incorporating small symbolic details and messaging about the issue as a whole. Titled Cycle of Subjugation, the exhibit invites viewers to reflect on the importance of accessible (sex)education and contraception, and how the lack of both perpetuates generational inequality. The final piece was publicly displayed May 7–9, 2025, and was recieved extremely well.
